In additive compositing, which is obtained by, for example, illuminating a black scene with a spotlight, the colors are "added" each time the spotlight is turned on. The primary colors for additive synthesis are red, green, and blue. The first color TVs had cathode ray tubes for each of the three colors. By combining red with an intensity of 1 to 100, blue with an intensity of 1 to 100, and red with an intensity of 1 to 100, a million different colors could be synthesized.
